Leicester City vs Man United – Leicester City Vs Manchester United: Three-straight For Ten Hag’s Men

Jadon Sancho’s first-half goal was enough to give Manchester United its third-straight win, a 1-0 defeat of struggling Leicester City at King Power Stadium on Thursday.

The Red Devils stretched their clean-sheet run to 189 minutes, as David De Gea was only asked to make two saves and claimed a pair of crosses.

Man United had less than 50% of the ball and took eight of the game’s 15 shots, though The Red Devils move into fifth place on nine points through five games.

That’s 14 spots and eight more points than Leicester City, who will know it got a little fortunate not to concede more goals late. >>Leicester City vs Man United<<

What we learned from Leicester vs Manchester United

Ten Hag’s tightened ’em up: Manchester United started the season 0-2, allowing six goals over two games to two teams who are good but not world beaters (yet!). Erik ten Hag then removed his captain Harry Maguire, trusting new signing Lisandro Martinez to play alongside Raphael Varane. It was a brave move but one he simply had to make at the time (Cristiano Ronaldo and Luke Shaw also lost their places).

There were chances late, with James Justin and James Maddison failing to take half chances, but Ten Hag will be happy with the zeroes. Since the switch, United has allowed one goal over 270 minutes and it was scored by Mohamed Salah. It’s what you get when a manager is given real power and it has United in a much-improved position even before Casemiro or Antony start a match in red. >>Leicester City vs Man United<<

‘Brendy’ Watch? Well, this is just bad. Leicester has one point from five matches, an Opening Day draws at home to Brentford. It’s been a tough run of fixtures, as the Foxes have lost to Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea, and Southampton, but this team is a far cry from good or even fun. The club’s sold Kasper Schmeichel and Wesley Fofana and so their back five on Thursday were Danny Ward, Luke Thomas, Jonny Evans, Wilfred Ndidi, and James Justin. That says a lot — though Evans was mostly solid — about the state of the team.

Story continues

Brendan Rodgers has done plenty of good in his time as a boss but he’s got a massive challenge ahead as Jamie Vardy doesn’t look right, Youri Tielemans is going to leave within a year, and Patson Daka and Kelechi Iheanacho are not getting minutes. It’s possible that results could dictate Sept. 10’s game between Leicester and Aston Villa has both Rodgers and former player Steven Gerrard playing for their jobs.

Sancho finding his footing: It took a year and three managers, but Jadon Sancho’s looking more like the Sancho who lit up the Bundesliga. Thursday is more about the lone chance and his ability to take it but it hardly could have come at a better time as Anthony Elanga or Sancho will soon lose a job to new signing Antony and both could be on the bench if Rashford keeps playing well and Ronaldo gets a run-up top.

Tactical Focus

Leicester got hold of the game after halftime and Ten Hag sacrificed Anthony Elanga and then Sancho for old Real Madrid teammates Cristiano Ronaldo and Casemiro. It was a bid to try and swing the match back in United’s favor.

Stars of the Show

Jadon Sancho: Got a chance. Took it. And it made all of the difference.

Marcus Rashford: He’s finding himself again as a motor for the attack. Is a goal run soon to follow?

Raphael Varane: The ex-Real Madrid man continues to ooze class and allow Lisandro Martinez to play with full aggression.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall: The reason Leicester would’ve felt alright selling Tielemans continues to run his shorts off.

Jonny Evans: Loads of clearances as Leicester had to open up for an equalizer.

What’s next

Leicester goes to Brighton at 9 am ET Sunday, 2.5 hours before Manchester United hosts unbeaten Arsenal in what’s suddenly looking like a match befitting the two clubs’ reputations.

Casemiro’s Underrated Yet Important Trait On Display In Man United’s Win Vs Leicester City

Casemiro had his first set of meaningful minutes in a Manchester United shirt last night and left having made a very good impression on fans.

Despite making some very key defensive interventions against Southampton, United’s new midfield superstar was only given 10 minutes. Against Leicester on Thursday night, he had over 30.

In these minutes, he had more of a chance to show fans his quality and did not disappoint. His passing, in particular, was both excellent in isolation and quite impactful for the team.

Here, the district goes through some of his best passes and analyzes why they were so good:

In the above example, Casemiro receives laterally from Varane. They are pressed by Maddison and Barnes, but Casemiro completely splits their press with an excellent chip around the corner.

Eriksen receives with time and space, so is able to turn and Rashford begins to make a vertical dart in behind.

His final ball doesn’t find Rashford but within a minute of being on the pitch, Casemiro’s pass leads to a good opportunity for United.

Leicester immediately tried to attack but McTominay intercepts a pass into Maddison. He plays back to Casemiro, who is rapidly pressed by the English midfielder.

But Casemiro remains cool and fires an excellent first-time pass into Eriksen, who once again has time and space to receive the ball in a good position.

He has no suitable vertical options here, but had Rashford been ~5 yards further forward in the direction he was facing Eriksen would have been able to play it into him in an extremely dangerous zone.

United build again. Casemiro receives from Dalot in a pocket just inside his half, and turns, although his touch is quite heavy – something to watch out for as it can be a weakness at times.

Here though, he does excellently to evade Boubacary Soumaré’s challenge and switches the ball to Sancho, who is overlapped by Malacia but Sancho uncharacteristically overhits the pass slightly.

Switches to wingers are a key facet of Ten Hag’s play, and seeing Casemiro pull off switches such as this one that put United in good positions out wide only further reassures fans of the impact he will have.

Here, Casemiro creates one of the best opportunities of the entire game with some absolutely incredible play.

James Justin receives the ball in space and shapes up to deliver a cross, and Casemiro – as always with him – is the first player to react to the danger.

As he presses Justin, the full-back tries to instead combine with a teammate, but Casemiro reads this, steals the ball off him, and has space to drive into.

The Brazilian scans and sees Rashford and Fernandes making runs into space. On his weaker left foot, he plays a very good through ball which, whilst it just misses Rashford, finds Fernandes.

United’s number eight has the ball in a very dangerous position on the right with Rashford dashing into the box. However, he probably delays his cross slightly too long and cannot beat Evans with it.

United had multiple good opportunities last night where they got into good positions but could not execute the final pass, and this was the most prominent example of that. Time will see it improve under Ten Hag.

Here, Leicester press United after Lisandro Martínez clears an attempted ball in behind that Casemiro sweeps up.

As United builds, Malacia plays laterally to Casemiro. Spotting the space behind Eriksen, the Brazilian plays an excellent first-time pass and completely breaks through the Foxes’ press.

Eriksen then has space to drive forwards with the ball, and he plays a searching long ball for Bruno Fernandes, who is running in behind on the right.

His pass doesn’t quite find Fernandes, but the cleared header falls to Dalot. The full-back looks to combine with his compatriot and almost gets in behind in a dangerous section of the box but Leicester defends Fernandes’ through ball.

Another good attack that was stopped by good defending from Leicester, coming from a Casemiro pass. His passing was really impactful in this game.

Here, Casemiro receives from McTominay and plays the pass first time around the corner to Malacia. The pass breaks the press and Malacia has time to turn and drive.

Ronaldo sprints in behind, but Malacia hesitates on playing the pass, and then the forward no longer becomes an option. Another good opportunity that just lacked the right decision-making, but was created through quick thinking from the Brazilian.

Here, Casemiro receives a pass inside from Ronaldo as United transitions. He very cleverly starts to drive inside to move Ndidi inside, which opens up the space for Fernandes to run into.

He then, using his weak foot, plays the midfielder in down the right and his cross nearly forces a Leicester own goal.

In just over 30 minutes on the pitch, these are all the opportunities that came from Casemiro’s passing. His ability on the ball was a concern of many coming into the season, but he looks strong in this regard so far for United.

Later in the game, a lot of his passes and touches were to slow the playdown and kill off the game, which was acknowledged by the commentators. This alongside his elite defensive ability helped United see out the win.

This level of game management is something that United has lacked for a long time, whilst also being something that helped Casemiro to win five Champions League titles in Madrid.

Now that he has been eased in, it is expected that the number 18 will start in midfield against bitter rivals Arsenal on Sunday, and the team will certainly be better off for it.

Why you should back Manchester United

The Red Devils have looked like a different team since the ugly 4-0 loss to Brentford in Matchweek 2. Liverpool held the ball for 71 percent of their matchup, but United managed five shots on target as the counter-attack worked to perfection. Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford scored as United got a huge jolt of confidence. Fernandes played well in a deferential role to Portugal teammate Ronaldo, but the 27-year-old thrives as the main man. He had 10 goals and six assists last season, but he scored 18 and set up 12 the season before Ronaldo’s return.

Ronaldo is 37 years old, but he can still bring some excitement off the bench and scored 18 goals in 2021-22. Leicester has had serious problems in the back, especially in the absence of goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel, who left for Nice in Ligue 1 after 11 seasons with the Foxes. His replacement, Welshman Danny Ward, has allowed 10 goals on 16 shots on target (35.7 save%) as his replacement. David De Gea has had his own problems in the Man U net, but Leicester has the fourth-fewest shots in the EPL (43), so he might not be challenged as often.

Why you should back Leicester City      >>Leicester City vs Man United<<

The Foxes haven’t had success so far, but they have the talent to challenge a shaky Man U defense. They also are unbeaten in the past four league meetings (2-2-0), including a 4-2 win at King Power Stadium in October. Youri Tielemans and Jamie Vardy both scored in that match, and while neither has found the net this season, they combined for 21 goals in 2021-22. Vardy has scored at least 15 in five straight seasons, so he is due for one, and he has two assists. David de Gea is nearly as unstable as Ward, saving just 65 percent of the shots he’s faced (13 of 20).

Tielemans, Harvey Barnes, and James Maddison are a strong engine for the attack featuring Vardy. Maddison has scored twice this season, and the team hopes he will be fit after missing out last week. Barnes scored the lone goal in the Chelsea loss. Leicester has taken the lead in both home games but couldn’t close out a victory. They should have chances against United, which has allowed 63 shots, fifth-most in the league. Eight of Man U’s 12 losses last season came on the road, and 10 of the Foxes’ 14 victories (and 34 of their 52 points) came at home.
